When you first had solar panels installed, you probably didn't even consider the need to keep them clean. Most panels have a glass surface just like windows and so get dirty just like windows.

Unlike windows, a solar panel must have a clean & clear surface in order for it to function properly. In fact, due to the position of the panels facing upwards they are more prone to dirt and debris like bird droppings & tree sap thus stopping your panels working at their optimum performance.

Won't the rain remove the dirt off the panels?

During the summer, there may be long periods where it does not rain and it's the summer when solar panels produce the most electricity. Don't think that an occasional rainstorm will effectively clean your solar panels. Here in the UK where it rains often, we still have to regularly wash our cars and solar panels are no different.

Does cleaning a solar panel really improve its efficiency?

YES! The best way to prove this is to record the amount of power being generated before the panels are cleaned. Get the panels cleaned and then compare the new reading with the ones that you took earlier. It is best to do this on a sunny day where the weather is constant as the sun disappearing behind the clouds intermittently is going to affect the results.

When is the best time to have them cleaned?

For the best results panels should be cleaned at least twice a year, the first clean should be at the start of spring or early summer as the days start to lengthen and the amount of sun reaching the panels increases, and again at the end of summer they should be cleaned again.

Industry reports say the lack of scheduled cleaning can cause solar panels to lose 15 - 25% of their efficiency. Bi-annual cleaning of panel surfaces eliminates these efficiency losses.
